José Alberto Díaz-Quiñonez, Board Member (Mexico)

Dr. Díaz-Quiñonez is the Director General of the Instituto de Diagnóstico y Referencia Epidemiológicos (InDRE), Ministry of Health, in Mexico City, Mexico. He is a Pharmaceutical Chemist Biologist (Autonomous University of Sinaloa) and PhD in Biomedical Sciences (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM). He has served in the private sector, the federal public administration and non-governmental organizations in Mexico. He has been advisor, scientific researcher and manager of biotechnology in the biopharmaceutical industry. Coordinator of the Scientific Advisory Board, Intersecretarial Commission on Biosafety of GMO’s; Coordinator of the Biosafety Commission for Research, Mexican Social Security Institute; Vice-president of the Research Committee, National Center for Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control. Founder and past president, Mexican Biosafety Association; Director of the section on biological risk management, Mexican Society of Public Health. Dr. Díaz-Quiñonez’s teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate students at UNAM, and has been visiting professor at several universities. He is a member of the National System of Researchers, the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico and the editorial committee in national and international journals. Since 2012 Dr. Díaz-Quiñonez has been co-chair of the Laboratory Network working group in the Global Health Security Initiative (G7 + Mexico) and consultant expert to the UN Biological Weapons Convention. In 2014 he was awarded the IFBA Biosafety Heroes Award and in 2015 the GSK-FUNSALUD National Prize for Epidemiological Biomedical Research. During his tenure as DG, InDRE received ISO 15189:2012 accreditation, ISO 9001:2015 certification and the National Health Quality Award (2015). It was also designated as WHO Collaborating Centre on Laboratory Biosafety (2017) and WHO Collaborating Centre for Training on Malaria Microscopy Diagnosis (2017).
