The International Federation of Biosafety Associations is pleased to welcome the National Center for Biological Safety (CSB) of the Republic of Cuba as an official Observer Organization to the IFBA. The CSB was created on July 15, 1996 through Resolution No. 67 as an entity to permanently address issues of biological safety throughout Cuba. The Resolution was issued by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (National Authority on Biosafety and the Biological & Toxin Weapons Convention). In this regard the CSB aims to organize, manage, implement, monitor and control the national system of biosafety, and, to organize, direct and control measures to comply with the obligations of the Republic of Cuba under international legal instruments including the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the BTWC. With leadership from the CSB, Cuba has recently adopted the “Biorisk Management Standard”. CSB’s main goals are to:
- Protect laboratory workers, the community & environment from risks associated with endemic, exotic and LMOs related to human, animal and plant health.
- Fulfill obligations under related International Treaties at the national level.
